Targeting Queenfish & Kingfish in UAE Summer | Tactics & Gear

How to Target Queenfish and Kingfish in the UAE Summer

In the UAE, "Summer Fishing" is often synonymous with "Night Fishing," but for those targeting pelagic powerhouses like Kingfish (Kanaad) and Queenfish (Talang), the game is all about water temperature and oxygen levels.

As the surface water hits 30°C+, these fish don't disappear; they simply change their zip code. Here is your playbook for landing trophy Kingies and Queenies while beating the Arabian sun.

1. Follow the Thermocline (Go Deep)

In the winter, Kingfish are often found cruising the surface. In the summer, they drop below the thermocline—the layer where warm surface water meets the cooler, oxygen-rich depths.

  • The Tactic: Switch from shallow-running minnows to deep-diving lures that can reach 6m to 10m.

  • Pro Tip: Use vertical metal jigs (80g–150g) over deep-water wrecks and drop-offs. If your sonar shows baitfish at 20 meters, that is where the Kingfish are waiting.

2. The Queenfish "Golden Hour"

Queenfish are highly visual hunters. During the UAE summer, they become most active during the "Grey Light" periods—30 minutes before sunrise and 30 minutes after sunset.

  • The Tactic: Target the shadows of bridge pilings (like those in Dubai Marina or near Saadiyat Island).

  • The Gear: Use a fast-action casting rod to launch sinking stickbaits. The "S-motion" of a stickbait is irresistible to a summer Queenfish looking for an easy meal.

3. Speed is Your Best Friend

Kingfish are the Ferraris of the Gulf. In the summer, their metabolism is high, and they are looking for fast-moving prey.

  • Trolling: Increase your trolling speed to 7–9 knots. Use high-speed trolling plugs that won't "blow out" or spin at these velocities.

  • Casting: If you spot a boil on the surface, don't just reel in—burn it. Use a high-gear ratio spinning reel to keep the lure moving as fast as possible.

4. Lighten Your Leader (Sometimes)

The UAE’s summer sun makes the water incredibly clear. Both species have excellent eyesight and can become "leader shy."

  • The Dilemma: Kingfish have razor-sharp teeth that require wire leaders, but Queenfish will often ignore a lure if they see the wire.

  • The Solution: Use a "Stealth Setup"—a heavy fluorocarbon leader (40lb–60lb). You might lose a few lures to Kingfish, but your strike rate for Queenfish and Golden Trevally will triple.

5. Essential Gear for the Summer Heat

Targeting these hard-fighting fish in 40°C+ requires gear that won't fail under pressure:

  • Braided Line: High-salinity summer water is abrasive. Use a premium braided line with at least 8 strands for smoothness and heat resistance.

  • UV Apparel: You can't catch fish if you're suffering from heatstroke. Invest in performance fishing jerseys and buffs to stay on the water longer.
